Mumbai-Howrah train accident
At least 18 carriages of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed in the Seraikela-Kharsawan area of Jharkhand, tragically killing two people and injuring twenty others. On Tuesday at 3:45 AM, the tragedy happened close to Barabamboo, over eighty km from Jamshedpur. The incident happened inside South Eastern Railway’s (SER) Chakradharpur Division.
Information about the accident
An adjacent freight train also derailed, according to SER spokeswoman Om Prakash Charan, but it’s unclear whether both events occurred at the same time. Eighteen coaches of the 22-coach 12810 Howrah-Mumbai Mail via Nagpur were involved in the incident. Out of them, 16 were pantry cars, 1 power car, and 1 passenger coach. The accident location is close to the line between the districts of Seraikela-Kharsawan and West Singhbhum.
Research and assistance initiatives
The trains have begun an official investigation into the incident. Present at the scene of the tragedy, Kuldeep Chaudhary, Deputy Commissioner of West Singhbhum, verified the number of dead and injured. Aditya Kumar Choudhary, the senior DCM of Chakradharpur, said that the Commissioner of Safety, Railways, will oversee the probe. Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, has instructed authorities to make sure the wounded get medical attention quickly and efficiently.
Interventions for rescue
Rescue and relief operations were promptly launched, and wounded travelers were given medical attention at Barabamboo before being sent to Chakradharpur for more care. Compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the relatives of the dead, Rs 5 lakh for those with serious injuries, and Rs 1 lakh for those with lesser injuries was offered by the railway authorities. A special train was organized to transfer the bulk of people to their destinations from the Chakradharpur railway station.
Government and public reaction
Deputy Commissioner A Mittal of East Singhbhum gave the assurance that all required steps were being taken to speed up rescue and relief efforts. The wife of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, JMM lawmaker Kalpana Soren, urged JMM and INDIA Bloc employees to support the local government in helping the victims get relief. Due to the tragedy, the South Eastern Railway also declared the cancellation and rerouting of many trains.
