After a recent murder-suicide at home in Bangkok, neighbors have been convinced the house (Number 44) is haunted by evil spirits and are calling for an exorcism.
In Thailand, superstitions, especially regarding luck, astrology, and the supernatural, are tangible elements of everyday living, governing the movements and actions of Thai people everywhere. The number 4 is considered extremely unlucky. In Mandarin, the number is pronounced the same way as death.
According to the neighbors, the 44 numbered house has now seen 11 deaths in the past 10 years. One household resident died from falling and hitting their head; another died from cancer, and others died from sudden health issues.
In the latest were a husband and wife in an apparent murder-suicide.
Police were summoned to the number 44 house on Saturday after family members found Ms. Natchanut, aged 49, lying face down, covered with a blanket. She had been hit with a hard object on her head.
A hammer was found in the bedroom, believed to be the weapon used in the murder. Inside the kitchen, they found the body of Mr. Surasee, aged 58, hanging by the neck from a ventilation shaft in the kitchen.
According to Thai media, Ms. Natchanat was a masseuse, while Mr. Surasee was a food delivery rider. They were married for 9 years.
At around 7:00 PM on August 8, neighbors heard the two deceased arguing and then became quiet, so they didn’t pay any attention because the two had been arguing frequently for about a month.
Mr. Surasee always watched Ms. Natchanat over jealousy because he believed his wife secretly saw another man.
Mr. Thanasak, 58, a neighbor, said that he and Ms. Natchanat had been friends for many years. He was recently hired to take Ms. Natchanat to places customers had made appointments.
He had made an appointment to take her to Samrong Market at 10:00 AM but noticed something needed to be fixed because Ms. Natchanat didn’t come out as agreed.
He went to call her at the front of the house, but the door was locked from the inside. He called for a long time and believed something was wrong, so he told their relatives to come and check.
The relatives decided to break the door down and get in, where they found that both of them were dead, so he immediately called 191.
Mr. Thanasak continued that he had a problem with the deceased’s husband before this. He thought Ms. Natchanat was having a relationship because he picked her up and dropped her off regularly on his motorcycle.
He said they had talked and reached an understanding about three months ago, and he did not think this kind of incident would happen.
Initially, the police question witnesses and collect evidence at the scene to thoroughly investigate the motive for the incident after sending both bodies for autopsy at the Police General Hospital’s Forensic Medicine.
Once the autopsies were concluded, the bodies would be handed over to the relatives to perform religious rites.
