A wildlife volunteer had a close call with a cobra snake while teaching children about reptiles at a school in northeaster Thailand
Nick Wildlife Facebook page posted that a staff member of the the Asorapit Wittaya Serpentology group, accidentally released a cobra during a snake awareness session.
The post shows the cobra quickly slithered up the trainer’s ankle, working its way into his trousers. The trainer remained calm and slowly lowered his trousers to avoid alarming the snake that could have led to a fatal bite.
In a video posted on the Facebook page it shows wildlife volunteers slowly help removed the cobra from inside the trainers pants.
The trainer said it was an important learning experience, saying that a small mistake could have had dire consequences. He stressed the importance of remaining still when encountering snakes, as movement can provoke them.
He said when encountering a snake at close range, the first thing a person should do is remain still. Once the snake calms down, the person can slowly back away in a straight line, as moving side to side may startle the snake and cause it to go into defence mode.
He said snakes generally won’t attack unless they feel threatened, and they are more likely to flee due to their natural fear of humans.
