Police in Chiang Rai have seized telecom equipment (Sim Boxes) used to randomly send out random numbers that the recipients could not identify who was calling. The Sim boxes were set up to assist call center gangs in the Golden Triangle.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Kritthapol Yisakorn, Commander of Provincial Police Region 5, told a press briefing that Taiwanese National Mr. Lin Chun Hung and Thai National, Mr. Sophon, 22 of Mae Mae Fah Luang District, Chiang Rai had been arrested after a tip-off from an earlier investigation.
He said while police were collecting evidence to request an arrest warrant, the 2 suspects fled from Chiang Rai to Bangkok. Investigators coordination with various police units and the two men were arrested in Tak Province and brought to Ban Du Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Mr. Lin Chun Hung, the Taiwanese national was allegedly the mastermind behind the installation of the sim boxes, while Mr. Sophon, 22, Village No. 4, Mae Salong Nok Subdistrict, Mae Fah Luang District, Chiang Rai Province rented the locations for the sim box installation points and acted as Mr. Lin’s interpreter.
Mr. Sophon told police investigator Mr. Lin hired him to be an interpreter to help coordinate the work for 1,000 baht per day. The officers believe that Mr. Lin is part of a call center gang scamming Thai citizens from across the border in the Golden Triangle Economic Zone.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Kritthapol said sim boxes were recovered from six locations in Chiang Rai.
A dormitory, Village 15, Ban Du Subdistrict, a rental room, Village 15, Ban Du Subdistrict, a female dormitory, Village 2, Ban Du Subdistrict, a rental house, Village 8, Ban Du Subdistrict, a dormitory in Village 1, Nang Lae Subdistrict and a guesthouse in Village 1, Mae Salong Nok Subdistrict, Mae Fah Luang District.
He said police investigators in Chiang Rai were working with telecom regulators to further locate portable communication towers and sim box locations used by call center scam gangs to call and scam Thai citizens of their money.
