Narcotics Suppression Police and Pha Muang Task Force soldiers intercepted and arrested a gang transporting 1.9 million methamphetamine pills from Chiang Rai City to Phayao Province.
Narcotics Suppression Police told Thai Media that they received information that a drug trafficking gang would be transporting a large amount of drugs from Mae Yao Sub-district, Mueang Chiang Rai District, so they informed forces at checkpoints points heading south from Chiang Rai province.
They intercepted a grey Isuzu pickup truck with Suphan Buri license plates and a white Isuzu pickup truck with Bangkok license plates heading out of Mae Yao Sub-district, passing Huai Plakang Intersection and turning onto the bypass road on the western side of the bypass.
Police managed to stop the grey Isuzu pickup and the White pickup, which was empty and being used as a scout vehicle, and they sped away.
When the officers inspected the back of the grey Isuzu pickup, they discovered black plastic bags containing approximately 1,940,000 methamphetamine pills. They arrested the driver and passenger of the truck loaded with drugs, Mr. Wutthipong, 23, and Ms. Wandee, 40.
Upon questioning the two suspects, they informed the police that the White pickup was heading for Phayao. The police radioed ahead for the Highway checkpoints to stop the truck, which was stopped in Tambon Ban Tom, Mueang Phayao District.
Inside the truck were the driver, later identified as Mr. Anuchit, 30 years old, and a young woman, only 17 years old, from Ubon Ratchathani Province. They were all taken to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau investigators for legal proceedings.
The arrest comes a day after Police in Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, seized 6 million methamphetamine pills and arrested two men after a vehicle chase through Mae Sai District to Chiang Saen District of Chiang Rai Province.
A search of the vehicle found 30 black plastic, each bag containing approximately 200,000 methamphetamine pills, totaling approximately 6,000,000 methamphetamine pills. Initial investigations revealed that a capitalist in Tachilek District, Myanmar, adjacent to Mae Sai District, hired the methamphetamine trafficking network.
Each person was paid 300,000 baht and received 40,000 baht in advance to be delivered to Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai Province.
Police took them into custody for legal proceedings at Chiang Saen Police Station.
