Soldiers from Pha Muang Task Force have seized 600,000 methamphetamine pills and 9.6 kilograms of heroin after clashing with a drug trafficking gang on the border in Chiang Rai Province.
The Pha Muang Task Force came across a group of suspicious individuals, approximately 6-8 people, carrying backpacks at a natural border crossing at Ban Pha Mi, Wiang Pang Kham Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province. They identified themselves and asked to search them.
However, the group of individuals immediately used firearms to shoot at the officers. The clash ensued for approximately 5 minutes. The soldiers were unharmed after the firefight, however due to the darkness they soldiers needed to wait for daylight to survey the area. Two more teams were deployed to control the area while waiting for verification in the morning.
At approximately 6:30 a.m. the units inspected the scene and found altered sacks. Inside were 3 Category 1 narcotics (methamphetamine) totaling 600,000 pills and 2 Category 1 narcotics (heroin) totaling approximately 9.6 kilograms.
Maj. Gen. Prawat Phopsuwan, commander of Chiang Rai’s Pha Muang Task Force said the evidence was handed over to the Mae Sai Police Station for further legal action.
