Thai Politician Sentenced to Death for Ordering Murder of Colleague

Khon Kaen MP Nawat Tohcharoensuk was sentenced to death for masterminding the murder of an assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administration six years ago.

BANGKOK – A criminal court has sentenced an MP for Khon Kaen to death, for masterminding the murder of a Provincial official. The Khon Kaen Court found Nawat, 52, guilty of hiring other defendants, including two former policemen, to Kill Suchart Khotethum.

Suchart was the assistant chief of the Khon Kaen provincial administration organization.

The victim was shot dead in front of his home in Muang district of Khon Kaen May 3, 2013. The victim was about to leave for work when the fatal shooting happened.  The court heard Nawat ordered the death of his colleague because the victim had an affair with his wife.

The court found Nawat guilty as charged and sentenced him to death. Ordered him to pay 300,000 baht in compensation for the funeral costs of the victim.

The ruling was based on witnesses’ testimony, forensic evidence and phone calls, collected by police investigators.

He has been detained at the provincial court awaiting a decision on his request for bail pending appeal of his death sentence.
