As Typhoon Ampil intensifies as it approaches Tokyo, Japan Airlines and Nippon Airways have cancelled hundreds of flights to and from Haneda and Narita airports.

As Typhoon Ampil moves eastward into Tokyo and other parts of Japan on Friday morning, public transport providers are cancelling numerous train services and the weather service is warning citizens to brace themselves for strong gusts and heavy rain.

The Japan Meteorological Agency and the Typhoon Warning Center’s most recent advisory states that Typhoon Ampil was experiencing sustained winds of 140 kph (85 mph).

As of five in the morning, the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre announced that there had been no modifications to its plan to halt bullet train operations between Tokyo and Nagoya, central Japan, for the duration of the day.

A small number of trains still run from Nagoya to Shin-Osaka via Kyoto, a well-liked tourist destination in western Japan.

The Typhoon Warning Centre and Japan’s Meteorological Agency predict that Typhoon Ampil’s centre will stay slightly offshore as it turns northeast and moves away from Japan.

The typhoon may only have a minor effect on Japan if it stays offshore and just touches the coast, delivering wind and rain to several regions, including Tokyo. The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre stated that if the storm’s path changes to bring the centre closer to the coast or perhaps reaches landfall, the effects could be substantially more severe.

According to Joint Typhoon Warning Centre, by Saturday AM local time, Typhoon Ampil should have weakened and will likely dissipate as it travels into cooler waters for the duration of the weekend.
