Nurses at the Mae Lao hospital in Chiang Rai Province dressed in black after being dissatisfied with a young doctor slapped a young nurse in the back, while on duty in the middle of the night.

Hospital executives said that they are urgently setting up a disciplinary committee and will hold a press conference on August 21.

Dr. Kongsak Chaichana, Director of Mae Lao Hospital, said the executive is looking into the inappropriate behavior by a doctor at the hospital on 19 August. The hospital’s executives have investigated and “confirmed that the incident really did happen” and stated Mae Lao Hospital does not support violence in any form.

The incident occurred at 22:16 pm on Saturday, August 17. A young doctor in question was new to the hospital and transferred from a state hospital in a neighboring area less than a year ago.

On the time of the incident, the doctor had given orders to the young nurse, but she allegedly preformed her duties to his dissatisfaction, causing the doctor hit the young nurse on the back twice. The nurse then informed her nursing team of the incident and the group reported the incident to the hospital director.

The next day all the nurses agreed to wear black clothes to show their dissatisfaction with the young doctor’s actions.

Initially, the hospital’s management said it was not ready to provide information because the hospital was setting up a disciplinary investigation committee for the incident.

Today, the relatives of the nurse, who is from Pa Ngae Subdistrict, Pa Daet District, traveled to the hospital to file a complaint and provide information to the hospital’s management. The hospital told they would hold a press conference about the incident on August 21.

Dr. Kongsak Chaichana said the doctor has been put on suspension follow an executive inquiry. He also stated that the Mae Lao Hospital would like to express its deepest condolences to the nurse and her family and the hospital will take all possible actions to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.

He said Mae Lao Hospital remains committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of all employees.
