After heavy rain for 3 continuous days, water from Chiang Rai’s Doi Pong Phrabat Mountain Range overflowed onto Phahonyothin Road at the entrance to Chiang Rai Rajabhat University in Ban Du Subdistrict.
The water could not drain quickly through the road, causing the four-lane road on the university side to be approximately 20-30 cm deep.
Later, the water level rose, allowing cars to pass through only one of the two lanes on the way up. This resulted in a traffic jam that stretched almost to Ban Du Fresh Market, a distance of approximately 1 kilometer.
After the incident, police officers from Ban Du Police Station and Chiang Rai Highways District dispatched officers to facilitate traffic and wait for the water to drain across Phahonyothin Road, which took approximately 2-3 hours.
Flash floods occur on Phahonyothin Road almost every year during the rainy season. They occur from Ban Du Subdistrict to Nang Lae Subdistrict and Tha Sut Subdistrict because Phahonyothin Road blocks the waterway all the way
