(CTN News) – In a visit to the biggest US teachers’ union on Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris pledged to “fight for the future” while getting closer to her opponent, Republican Donald Trump, according to recent surveys.
A stolid presidential contest has been thrown off balance by Kamala Harris’ unexpected ascent to the Democratic nominee in the election on November 5. Polls indicate that Harris is narrowing the gap with Trump.
The 59-year-old Kamala Harris spoke to the American Federation of Teachers in Houston on labour rights and economic policy. She also criticised Republicans for blocking the implementation of gun control laws in the wake of school massacres and supported accessible healthcare and child care.
“Our future depends on it,” Kamala Harris told the 3,500 attendees.
Our most fundamental liberties are what we are fighting for. Bring it to this room of leaders.
Nearly 100,000 primarily white women joined a Zoom call to discuss Harris’s plan and raise funds, according to the organisers of #AnswerTheCall. Lately, similar calls were made by Latinas, Black women, and men.
After Biden withdrew his bid for reelection on Sunday, a number of polls, including one conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, indicate that Kamala Harris and Trump are placing themselves roughly evenly in the early stages of their contest, laying the foundation for a close campaign over the next three and a half months.
In a nationwide poll released on Thursday by the New York Times and Siena College, Kamala Harris has narrowed Trump’s lead.
In the race for registered voters, Trump led Kamala Harris 48 percent to 46 percent, down from 49 percent to 41 percent over Biden in early July, when the Democratic Party called for Biden’s resignation following his appalling performance in the debate.
According to national surveys, Americans generally support political candidates; but, the Electoral College, which determines presidential elections, is typically influenced by a small number of closely contested states.
Emerson College/The Hill broke the good news that Harris is getting closer to Trump in five crucial battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. With the exception of Wisconsin, which is at a standstill, Trump leads Harris in the poll of those states’ registered voters.
According to polls, despite his slight advantage, 78-year-old Trump has not seen the surge in support that his rivals had hoped for following the carefully orchestrated, lavishly aired, and highly scripted Republican National Convention last week.
Trump blasted Harris during his first rally after Biden’s replacement on the ticket on Wednesday night and on Thursday via the internet.
“Because Lyin’ Kamala Harris is a radical left Marxist and worse, we’re not ready for a Marxist president!” Trump shared the content on social media.
Discussion is pending
On Thursday, the Trump campaign questioned a debate versus Biden scheduled for September 10.
The Trump team stated that details of the debate cannot be verified until the Democrats select a candidate, which might occur in the first week of August, notwithstanding Harris’s invitation to confront Trump on that day.
In support of Harris, more than forty former US Justice Department officials—mostly from Democratic administrations—signed a statement describing Trump as a danger to the rule of law.
The former president Trump jeopardises democracy, international partnerships, and our country. The letter, signed by former US Attorney General Loretta Lynch and others, was obtained by Reuters and reads, “He routinely disregarded the law as president.”
According to a source on Thursday, Harris and former president Barack Obama have been in regular contact, and Obama intends to support Harris as the Democratic nominee for president.
Kamala Harris’ first web video ad went live on Thursday.
Harris narrates the struggle for American liberties in the commercial to the tune of Beyonce’s “Freedom.”
In order to appeal to younger voters, Harris made a TikTok account and within hours accumulated over 500,000 followers.
The next significant development is Harris’ choice to run against Trump’s nominee, Ohio Senator JD Vance, for vice president.
A number of up-and-coming Democrats are contesting, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and the governors of Pennsylvania, Andy Beshear, Roy Cooper, and Josh Shapiro.
The rise of Harris has largely eclipsed the rise of Trump a week after the Republican National Convention and just 12 days after he narrowly escaped an attempted assassination that resulted in an injury to his ear.
As reported by FBI Director Christopher Wray at a House hearing on Wednesday, investigators are not certain whether Trump was shot or struck by shrapnel. In his statement, Trump stated that he had been shot in the ear.
Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller used an expletive to refer to the idea that Trump was not shot as a “conspiracy.”
