(CTN News) – According to a recent Forbes Adviser list, Karachi is the second riskiest city for tourists. The report, issued on July 11, placed Karachi at 93.12 out of 100, trailing only Venezuela’s Caracas, which received a perfect score of 100. Myanmar’s Yangon came in third with a score of 91.67.
The Forbes Adviser study identified Karachi’s considerable personal security hazards, which include crime, violence, terrorism threats, natural disasters, and economic vulnerabilities. This combination of threats has significantly contributed to the city’s high risk rating.
Historical Context of Karachi’s Livability
To add to the concerns, the US State Department has issued a level 3 travel advice for Pakistan, advising tourists to reconsider their plans to visit the city owing to safety concerns.
The city was also identified as having the fourth highest infrastructure security risk. This indicator measures the quality and availability of critical infrastructure in the city, increasing its risk profile.
Karachi’s inclusion on rankings of unlivable cities is not a recent occurrence. In 2017, the Economist Intelligence Unit listed Pakistan Capital Karachi as one of the world’s least safe cities. The city has consistently been ranked as one of the world’s top five “least livable” cities.
In stark contrast, the same Forbes Adviser survey listed Singapore as the safest city, with a score of zero.
Following Singapore, Tokyo, Japan, was ranked second safest with a score of 10.72, and Toronto, Canada, finished third with a score of 13.6.
This comparative analysis highlights the substantial differences in safety and infrastructure between the world’s riskiest and safest cities, as well as the problems that cities like Karachi confront in improving their liveability and safety standards for both residents and tourists.
