(CTN News) – As a result of the severe rains, more than four thousand residences in the city of Sinuiju and Uiju County, which is located close to the border with China, have been flooded, according to the state-run media KCNA, which reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, some 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) of farmland as well as various public buildings, infrastructure, and highways were inundated. This prompted the powerful politburo of the governing Workers’ Party to convene an emergency meeting that lasted for two days earlier this week.
North Korea Says Thousands of Homes Hit by Flooding
The meeting was presided over by Leader Kim Jong Un, who voiced his deep worry over the devastation and demanded the implementation of stringent steps to rebuild the regions that were impacted, according to KCNA.
On Sunday, Kim had a look at the places that were inundated. In recent days, the region has been impacted by the tremendous rainfall that Tropical Storm Gaemi has brought about. This downpour has resulted in a landslide that has claimed the lives of twelve people in southern China and flash floods in other areas.
For the last several weeks, the state-run media in North Korea has been sounding the alarm about the next monsoon season. They have also published several stories on the various measures that have been taken to mitigate the effects of harsh weather.
The monsoon season on the Korean peninsula occurs every year during July; however, in recent years, the area has been subjected to severe weather throughout the summer months.
