(CTN News) – In a post that he made on Truth Social on Saturday night, former President Donald Trump gave his support to two candidates running in the Republican primary election for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, making the race very close.
Abe Hamadeh, an enthusiastic election denier, was the sole candidate whom Trump had previously sponsored; nevertheless, he decided to double his endorsements and also vote for Blake Masters in the primary election.
“On Tuesday, we have a very important Republican primary election for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, with two spectacular America First candidates,” Trump said. “The election is for the 8th Congressional District.”
I wholeheartedly support both Blake Masters and Abe Hamadeh for the position of future representative for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. Each of them has my full and unqualified support.
The last time Masters ran for office, he was unsuccessful in the general election against the incumbent Democratic senator, Mark Kelly, in 2022. Trump supported Masters in that contest.
Master has been completely ignored by Trump in the ongoing campaign for congressional seats, and up until this weekend, he has solely supported Hamadeh.
Trump endorses 2 candidates in competitive Arizona Republican primary
Trump had previously stated that Hamadeh was “doing a terrific job,” and he added during a campaign rally held at a megachurch in Phoenix in June that “his election was rigged the last time.”
This was a repetition of unfounded claims, stating that election tampering was the cause of Hamadeh’s unsuccessful bid to become Arizona’s attorney general in 2022.
Trump’s last-minute double support, which came just days before the Arizona primary on July 30, unites the former president with his running partner, Senator JD Vance of Ohio.
The endorsement came only weeks before the primary election. As a result of Vance’s prior support for Masters in the primary election, which took place in October, Trump and Vance were in disagreement with their endorsements until Saturday evening.
“I am overjoyed to have J.D. Vance, our next Vice President, endorse me in my race for the House of Representatives!” On July 16, exactly one day after Trump announced his choice of Vance as his vice presidential candidate, Masters published an article on X.
After receiving Masters’ message, a campaign account for Hamadeh replied by saying “welp” and bringing to the attention of social media users the fact that Trump had endorsed its candidate.
Since the implementation of the third round of redistricting in 2013, the Republican Party has maintained control of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. When it comes to the general election, the candidate who emerges victorious in the primary election on Tuesday will be the overwhelming favorite to defeat Democrat Gregory Whitten, who is running in the Democratic primary without any opposition.
