Rescue divers in Chiang Mai are searching for the body of a Korean man who reportedly removed his clothes, waded into the Ping River, and disappeared on Sunday.

Police at the scene recovered the man’s belongings, including a pair of muddy leather shoes, light brown trousers and a passport in the name of Won Chang, 44, from the Republic of South Korea.

Mr. Sek Sak, 46, who was fishing at the time, told police he saw the foreign man get out of a tuk-tuk on Rattanakosin Road. He walked about 3-4 meters from where he and his friends were fishing and heard an object falling into the water.

Moments later, he saw a man wearing only underwear walking into the river and slowly throwing himself into the water as if he were going to swim the breaststroke. Then the man floated down to the middle of the water and disappeared. But then, a small book floated up and got caught on his fishing line.

When he pulled into the fishing line, he found that it was a passport. At the same time, he saw the man floating and disappearing near the bridge pylon. I thought it was unusual, so I quickly called the police to come and investigate.

According to Chiang Mai police, the Korean man’s passport identified him as Mr. Wong Chang, 44. Police assumed the tourist might have had personal problems.

A police diving team continued to search the area where the man tossed the notebook into the water and surrounding areas for his body. As for the cause, facts, and motives, the police are still investigating what happened and will report the progress.
