Authorities have temporarily closed down Jungle Flight in Chiang Mai after a Chinese tourist was killed and another was seriously injured.
The catastrophe occurred at Jungle Flight in Chiang Mai’s Doi Saket area when a big tree fell onto a cable-supported bridge the couple was standing on. According to local authorities, they fell 15 meters to the ground.
According to Chiang Mai police, Ms. Jing Chen, 44, was discovered dead on the ground, while Mr. Liu Yang, 46, was seriously injured. He was sent to the Doi Saket Hospital in Chiang Mai. They were both on holiday from China.
Jungle Flight workers reported that recent heavy rains had disturbed the soil around the tree’s base, causing it to topple over.
Chiang Mai police closed the premises to conduct a comprehensive assessment and guarantee that all equipment fulfills safety regulations.
Meanwhile, district officials have initiated an investigation to establish whether the attraction was infringing on forest land. Other zipline attractions in the province will also be inspected, they said.
Local officials have been concerned about zipline accidents in Chiang Mai. Over the past few years, several incidents have resulted in serious injuries and even fatalities.
These accidents often result from poor maintenance, inadequate safety checks, and untrained staff. In some cases, safety gear fails or is improperly secured.
Authorities have called for stricter regulations and better staff training to ensure the safety of thrill-seekers. While Chiang Mai’s natural beauty makes it a popular spot for ziplining, safety must be a priority to prevent future tragedies. – Thai PBS
